1. Makar-Sankranti- Kite festival| Lohri

This festival falls in the month of January , on of the most ancient festival celebrated according to solar cycles. It marks the start of longer days, with the end of winter of solistice. This festival is dedicated to the Hindu religious sun god Surya. People keenly wait for this festival to fly kites. The string which is used to fly kite also contains some abrasive to cut other people’s kites. People enjoy this full day on their terrace flying kites.

Significance: It is also seen as the start of agricultural culture.

2. Republic day

It honours the day on which the “Longest written constitution” i.e “The Constitution of India ” came into effect on January 26, 1950. As India became a Republic country. The main celebration is held in Country’s capital ‘Delhi’ at Rajpath in front of President of India. Parades take place at the Rajpath, which is performed as a tribute to India; its unity in diversity and richness of its cultural heritage .

Pongal is the most celebrated festival in the southern part of India. It is dedicated to the sun god. It marks the sun’s long six months journey northwards. It is celebrated by distributing the Pongal dish. art of the celebration is the boiling of the first rice of the season consecrated to the Sun . It is celebrated from January 14- January 17.

4. Vasant Panchami- Great day of Goddess Saraswati

It marks the beginning for the King of the seasons – Spring. Celebrated differently by peoples according to their region. It is mostly dedicated to goddess Saraswati which the goddess of knowledge. People dress in yellow saris or shirts, share yellow colored snacks and sweet .It is also has been a historical tradition of Sikhs as well , they conducts langar on this day.

5. Kumbh Mela.

It is also known for the largest gathering of people in the one place on Earth. Hindus gather to bathe in a sacred or holy river. Additionally, four fairs are widely recognized as the Kumbh Melas: the Prayagraj Kumbh Mela, Haridwar Kumbh Mela, the Nashik-Trimbakeshwar Simhastha, and Ujjain Simhastha. Observed every 3 years, although it is held in 12 years in some places with the Ardha (half) Kumbh Mela at 6 years. over 30 million a day gathering of people occurred once till then it has been on UNESCO’s Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

A Hindu festival celebrated in the honour of God Shiva, it the marks the day of his marriage. Marks a remembrance of “overcoming darkness and ignorance” The ardent devotees keep awake all night. Maha Shivaratri is celebrated at night. Mahakaleshwar temple in ujjain is one of the venerated shrines of shiva, where large number of devotees gather. Maha Shivaratri is observed devoutly by unmarried girls seeking a suitable husband.

The festival starts on the night before by Holika Dahan- where people gather, perform religious rituals in front of the bonfire. The next morning is celebrated as Rang Holi – the festival of colours, where people smears each other with colours, water guns and balloons are also used to play with each other. Friend or stranger, rich or poor, man or woman anyone and everyone smear colour on each other. Groups carrying drums going place to place, singing, dancing can be seen everywhere.

12. Rath Yatra- Orissa

It is a very grand festival celebrated in the Puri. Associated with the Hindu lord Jagganath. As part of Ratha Yatra, the deities of Jagannath, his elder brother Balabhadra and younger sister Subhadra are taken out in a procession out of Jagannath Temple and placed in the Ratha. Ratha pulled to the gate of Gundicha Temple. After a stay for seven days, the deities return to their abode. Three richly decorated chariots, resembling temple structures, are pulled through the streets of Puri.
