9 Foods You Should Never Eat on an Empty Stomach
8. Bananas (The Debated One)

You may have seen this one shared widely online: “Eating a banana on an empty stomach spikes your magnesium and upsets your heart’s balance.” This claim is not supported by solid evidence. A medium banana contains only about 32 mg of magnesium, while an adult needs somewhere around 310 to 420 mg a day. That’s less than 10% of your daily need, nowhere near enough to cause a spike. And in healthy people, the kidneys do an excellent job of keeping minerals like magnesium and potassium in balance.
So why is the banana on this list? Because a medium banana is mostly carbohydrate (about 27 grams, with around 14 grams of natural sugar) and has very little protein or fat. Eaten alone, it can leave some people feeling hungry again within an hour or two, or slightly low on energy. Ripeness matters too: very ripe bananas have more sugar, while slightly green ones contain more resistant starch, which digests more slowly.
One group should be careful: people with kidney disease, or those on certain blood pressure medicines, may need to limit potassium, and a banana contains roughly 420 mg of it. If that’s you, ask your doctor.
What to do instead: Don’t give up bananas, just team them up. A banana with peanut butter, a handful of nuts, Greek yogurt, or oats gives you a slower, steadier release of energy and keeps you full much longer. It’s a simple trick that works with almost any fruit.
