9 Foods You Should Never Eat on an Empty Stomach
7. Fried and Greasy Food

Samosas, kachoris, puris, bacon, hash browns, or a fast-food breakfast sandwich: a heavy, oily breakfast is popular on both sides of the world, and it’s easy to see why. But of all the nutrients we eat, fat is the one that slows down digestion the most. A greasy meal can sit in your stomach for hours, which is why you feel heavy, sleepy, and sluggish afterward, the classic food coma.
High-fat meals can also make acid reflux more likely, because they can relax the valve between the stomach and food pipe. For people who already deal with heartburn or gastritis, a fried breakfast on an empty stomach is a common trigger.
The oil matters too. The World Health Organization has called for the elimination of industrially produced trans fats, which are often found in some packaged snacks, bakery items, and foods fried in repeatedly reheated oil. These fats are strongly linked to heart disease, which is another reason not to make deep-fried food a daily habit.
What to do instead: Pick lighter options that still keep you full, like boiled or poached eggs, oatmeal, idli with sambar, poha, or whole-grain toast with avocado or peanut butter. If you love your fried favorites, enjoy them as an occasional treat later in the day, or try baking or air-frying them for a lighter version of the same taste.
