Cauvery calling– Planting 242 crore Trees, is a twelve year-long project to revitalize Cauvery river taken by Jaggi Vasudev majorly known as ‘Sadhguru’. He is the founder of ‘ISHA FOUNDATION’.

It is a non-profit international organization run by volunteers totally dedicated to the wellbeing of all life on the planet.

Sadhguru’s Isha Foundation has been working on many different projects to restore enviornment, rebuild communities which includes:

• Project Green Hands: A reforestation project aiming to plant 114 million trees in TamilNadu, INDIA. Which will help in restoring 33% forest cover.

• Action for Rural Rejuvenation: He says, it is a rural rejuvenation program which will help in human upliftment, offering them medical care, building communities, rehabilitation to more than 2500 villages in rural southern india.
• Isha Vidhya: It provides education to the rural scape of Tamilnadu for transforming their lives with the modern-day, education of computers, quality English medium Schools.

Rally For Rivers

After getting the massive support from all walks of society for the Rally for Rivers project .

That is about 162 million people’s support making it a world’s largest ecological movement,

Sadhguru has come up with the plan of revitalizing Cauvery river by Planting 242 crore Trees across its basin.

The first project approved under Rally for Rivers was revitalizing the WAGHADi river-the tributary of Godavari river in Yavatmal, Maharashtra, India.

For which the government of Maharashtra has sanctioned 415 crores.

Sadhguru said, “It’s heartening to see the speed and commitment with which the Government of Maharashtra has approved the Detailed Project Report for revitalization of Waghari River in Yavatmal,

which is the epicentre of India’s painful farmer suicide story.

The project will not only support the river & biodiversity around the river but also boost farmers’ income manifold, thereby enhancing rural economy.

Why Cauvery Calling?

Sadhguru said: “Cauvery has been the source of wellbeing, prosperity and the very source of life for these lands.

Cauvery has been receded by 40% in last 50 years.

A forest-fed perennial river is fast becoming a seasonal stream as 87% of tree cover has been removed in 50 years. 

Cauvery is calling, do you have the heart to hear?”

As there is many scientific data available saying that a full grown tree , which usually takes twelve years if you plant , will retain approximately 3800 litres of water in soil.

So they are planning to plant about 242 crore trees across the cauvery river basin that is bringing about one third of its region under forest cover.

They are having a board with the former Indian Space Research Organisation chairperson, the CEO of World Wide Fund-India,

a former supreme court judge, the chairperson of Biocon ltd, the topmost water expert in country and a team of hundred full time volunteers dedicated for this project.

He says: Cauvery Calling – is essentially an economic plan for the farmers and an ecological plan for the country. Cauvery is the first step.

If we pull this off in twelve years time in Cauvery Basin, this will be a game-changer for the nation and for the tropical world.

Two Problems. One Solution.

The first major problem is of a large scale deforestation done in the last 50 years it may be for any reasons such as agriculture, buildings , infrastructure, factories etc.

This disappearing of trees has caused major problem of soil erosion eventually reducing the water holding capacity of soil.

This large scale cutting of trees in the Cauvery Basin has led in drying up of the river.

Due to which a large population who was dependent on the Cauvery River water is suffering.

Some of the serious facts are:

• Cauvery River has been depleted about 40% in last 50 years.
• 80% of its tree cover has been taken out.
• Whole Tamilnadu is facing critical groundwater depeletion, water crisis in Chennai , India are the example of it.

The second Major issue is of Farmer’s Suicide:

According to the ISHA FOUNDATION and THE RALLY FOR RIVERS BOARD

• About 45000 farmer suicide in last 15 years only in Tamilnadu, this digits gets doubled or triple when it comes for whole India.
• A major part of the farmers community is under loan.
• 17 districts in Tamilnadu were hit by draught.

India is a Agricultural nation, whose large portion of GDP is from Agriculture and still the Farmers are suffering why?

This is an major issue we should act now to save our farmers, our rivers, our resources. But How ?

Agroforestry

Agroforestory is the answer to the question.

According to Sadhguru: Tree based agriculture is has always been in India , it is not new.

Tree based agriculture has the potential of increasing the revenue of the farmer by 300-400%in the 6-7 years.

Today timber business is over 250 billion and that too India is importing about 1 lakh crores of timber every year.

Because no farmer wants to grow trees. If he grow tree it cannot be cut. Due to some stupid laws.

Sadhguru Said: He wanted to bring a law that a farmer can grow whatever he wants and cuts whenever he wants.

I am not promoting tree cutting. But to cut a tree you have to first grow it right? If you grow a billion trees you may cut a few trees.

Otherwise you will not even grow it.

Agroforestry along the river basin can help our rivers survive by bringing the sufficent land under tree cover.

ISHA FOUNDATION’s project Cauvery Calling is looking at shifting farmers to agroforestry and planting 242 crores trees in the Cauvery basin.

According to the data given by ISHA FOUNDATION:

About 69760 farmers in Tamilnadu have shifted to Agroforestory and within five -seven years , their wealth has increased by three hundred to eight hundred percent.

Once you show that agroforestory is economically succesfull, it will happen everywhere.

Trees help in holding the water from rain, as the roots makes the network of channels beneath the soil.

As the water is absorbed it percolates horizontally as well .

This water can feed the stream and rivers for maintaining their flow even after the rainy season is over.

Why Cauvery Calling Campaign!

Cauvery Calling Campaign starts off at Tala Cauvery .A 3500 km long journey along the cauvery basin for spreading awareness about the campaign.

A bike rally led by SADHGURU himself will travel all along the cauvery basin starting from Talacauvery on his birthday.

The data shows that planting 242 crores trees across the Cauvery basin will help in holding upto 12 trillion litres of water which will help Cauvery river to flow again like it was 50years ago.

ISHA FOUNDATION has estimated a cost that is 42 rupees per tree, so it needs to raise an amount of RS.10142 crore .

Which is totally will be a crowd-funded project, having Internet the primary source for funding.

This money will be given to the farmer to plant a tree in his own land.
